fair? won't issue no claims!

i recently was insured with ASDA for 2 years. I had payed every month in full, however in February, the debit bounced from my account. As soon as i knew, i phoned up and payed. They said my following installment would be taken as normal from my account as a direct debit. March's payment (which was also the final payment of my year) did not come out. I then recieved a letter saying my account had been cancelled.
I phoned them up and payed in full, but they said they could not reinstate my account to give me my years no claims, because the account had been cancelled due to not being payed. They told me my direct debit had been stopped after my previous payment had bounced. They also said they had sent me a letter to inform me of this, though i had not recieved this.

Am i completley out of luck here, or is this highly unfair?
I had the money in my account to pay my last installment, surely it is there fault that they stopped my direct debit and did not collect the money.

Does anyone have any advice?
