    Neither!

Assuming you're with BT, Sign up to their 'Call Sign' service. This provides a 'virtual' number that connects with your existing phone line. When anyone calls the 'new' number, you ger an American-style ring (single burst) instead of the usual double ring it presently gives for people calling your existing ring.

Once you know what your new number is, program the diversion from your 0845 number to it - and remember DON'T give out the new BT number to anyone.

Ig goes without saying, that should you be using your home phone line to make or recieve calls, your virtual line cannot be accessed, but the cost savings over TWO lines are immense!

Unfortunately, if you go with a 'virtual' service provider, you're stuffed if they don't decide to retail BT's service to their customers - but there's no technical reason why they cannot, apart from having to reach a commercial agreement with BT.

AIUI, Neither Kingston (Hull) not Virgin Media offer an equivalent service, so unless you switch back to BT, when the service will be available to you once more - the only other solution is to get an additional line installed (or a VOIP equivalent, that uses Skype or a SIP-based Internet solution. But these are more fiddly, and expensive than Call Sign.

Really? At least the customer can choose whether to call it or not. I have started using 0845 routing, and it is VERY customer friendly, as my time is spend between 3 locations daily, it is a SINGLE number to call, saving those that call me up to the loads of connection and time charges as they try to track me down.

It is those outfits that have no need for 'intelligent routing' and simply want to discourage callers lingering that are the problem. Some of us are playing a fair game.

No, you can use 01, 02 and the newer 03 numbers that do exactly the same thing, ,and are all charged at the standard rate from a landline and mobile,( the 2 or 3 providers that are now including these calls have all highered their line rentals and call charges so that people who don't use these numbers now have to pay for them anyway, thanks to people/businesses like you/yours).

    e.g. calls from a payphone to 0845, 20ppm, calls to an 01/02/03 number 1ppm.

Calls from mobiles, (and it does depend on network), to 0845, up to 40ppm,not included in packages, (except for some O2 historic packages)

Calls via most telcos via landlines, are usually at least 50% dearer than 01/02/03 numbers!

Have you been on to the "saynoto0870" site ?
