I am currently running a desktop and a laptop. I want to add another desktop to the house
Current desktop is connected to the net and uses XP Home. Laptop is running windows 2000
If i wanted to connect up a 2nd desktop and run XP Home on that would i need another copy of windows or just another license?
Where is best / cheapest place for such a thing?
Regards
Pete

Hi
I have 1 copy of xp home edition, running on 2 computers, updated both to sp2. Both set up for automatic updates and have never had a problem.
Never had to obtain another license and never had to phone Microsoft.
So I would say try it and see, works for me and if works saves you money.
Hope this helps0 -
dont microsoft count that as piracy???. I know its a breach of Microsoft T@C. What about the validation tool thats just been released wont that stop that?0

The validation tool wouldn't stop it. I think it only checks against known product keys in circulations amongst filesharers.sco0ter wrote:dont microsoft count that as piracy???. I know its a breach of Microsoft T@C. What about the validation tool thats just been released wont that stop that?
But it is against the license conditions.0 -
This is what the validation tool is supposed to do. This is taken fom the microsoft website
Q:
What information is collected from my computer?
A:
The genuine validation process will collect information about your system to determine if Windows is genuine. This process does not collect or send any information that can be used to identify you or contact you. The only information collected in the validation process is:
Windows product key
PC manufacturer
Operating System version
PID/SID
BIOS information (make, version, date)
BIOS MD5 Checksum
User locale (language setting for displaying Windows)
System locale (language version of the operating system)
Surely they would be able to tell if 2 different computers were using the same key.0 -

Hi
Yes it gives you the validation tool, but no problems with that either, I think it just checks that its a legimitate copy of xp.
As for legality, don't know, probably not, but it let me do it, so if Microsoft don't have a problem then neither do I.
I think I read somewhere, that Microsoft are not really bothered about the home edition, its been out a long time now, so their probably concentrating all their efforts into Vista, and making that secure.
But there again, who knows, especially if they drop all their support for xp in the few years.
I really think Microsoft were after the piracy in the beginning when xp was first launched, but like I say its old hat now and a new system is on its way.
So legal or not, against the license or not, breach of rules or not, its a personal choice.0 -
Better not discuss this any more as its a close to (if not already)breaking forum rules.
Please do not discuss subjects where you know doing so breaks the t&cs of another company/site0
