Veho slide and film scanner

Hi all.
i recently purchased a VEHO scanner, basic little usb plug in gadget that can scan in old slides to be used on screen, printed out etc. i have a lot of old slides from past family gatherings and of kids etc that i would love to upload and play around with.
i got the thing installed and working.
my problem is the scanner, (it's a manual thing, you basically insert the slides into a holder which feeds into a slot on the scanner (about the size of a pint glass) and it instantly reads them 'live' on screen)
the problem is this. it reads the slide fine, and your picture comes up on the screen, but then it continutes reading it and it ends up invariably too white.. you can take a snapshot as it's uploading but the quality is crap (on an already pretty poor image, as most were taken in the 60's and prior) and i dont want to have to take a grab shot of these slides as they upload. i'd like the scanner to read the best possible picture and show me that..
a friend suggested there may be a way to alter the device settings so that the white balance reading is set as lower or something like that.
has anyone any experience of these little gadgets and could offer me some advice on how to go about changing settings or getting it to do what it's told.
many thanks.
