New laptop for first year uni nurse student

 Hi I am looking for a new laptop to buy as I have just started my first year in uni in nursing. I was thinking of buying the Dell Inspiron 1545 T1600 3GB 250GB 15.6 Laptop from Tesco Direct at £399 http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.205-1173.aspx Can anyone advise if this is ok for me as I don't know much about laptops? :o

  • That should be fine.

Most people worry about the spec "not being enough", but if your spending more than £350 then you should be fine.

I would suggest shopping around and see if you can get any more freebies that you may need for the same price.

Do you need Microsoft Office, a printer, laptop bag?

You will qualify for student discount on Microsoft office, I think I'm correct in saying that the NHS has a deal with microsoft as well.

You could always download Open Office which is free, and compatable.

    Or Student discounted price here

Make sure you ask if they give discounts for uni students, i work for a uni, and uni people get discounts, apple do 13% off, I know norton's give discount, can get notron's AV pro for £38 due to uni, no harm in asking

Most unis will require you to register your computer befor using the network, they normally work like this:
    1. Registration: Students will be led through an online process to register their computer. This allows the hardware to be associated with the name of a student.
    2. Screening: Students will be prompted to download a piece of software that will ensure that recommended patches, anti-virus software and other recommended programs are installed on their computers (see list below).
    3. Updating: If students' computers are lacking any of the recommended security software, they will be prompted to download and install it. Until those updates are complete, the students will not be able to use their personal computers to access the Internet -- including e-mail, fileservers -- except to access the recommended security software.
You may be able to get Antivitus and Office 2007 free from your Uni.

all that companies ask for is proof you are either working for a uni or a student, your email addy you get from the uni is what they are after most times, especially if you order online, (use uni email to order, then you'll get the automatic discount, as all uni's email addy's are ended with a uni prefix)

Post #7 is the way to go but costs significantly more at £18 inc p&p and VAT. It will be the full Enterprise edition I think. You do not d/load it but receive a full boxed disc and activation code.
