Internet phone voip no line rental

I am currently geting my phone service with Virgin, along with Broadband, 2MB soon to increase to 8/10MB. Currently live in Northern Ireland.
My call charges are about £8 per month and line rental is £10/11 per month.
Apart from two people in Germany, whom we phone ocassionally (once a month at most), calls are local.
My wife has a PAYG mobile, as do I and also my son (Total PAYG bills are approx £15 per month).
I am quite happy with Virgin boadband, but think I could dispense with Virgin's phone service and line rental. I want to be able to make phone calls conveniently to friends and family via their ordinary phones.
Can anyone recommend a very cheap service using VOIP which would allow me to have no line rental yet meet my needs. Thanks for any advice.
