Bear in mind how long it takes to move stuff yourself. If you are moving out on the same day as the new people are moving in then you must be sure to get everything out of the house before completion. The house could belong to the new owners by lunchtime, and they will expect it to be clear.

Has anyone got any suggestions about how to go about finding a decent removal company? I've asked for recommendations from friends and colleagues, and haven't received any. Now I don't know where to go.

We're planning to move (fingers crossed it all goes through) about a mile to the new place (we're in Kent if that makes any difference), have enough stuff to fill a proper truck rather than a Luton Transit, and don't know where to look for someone suitable!

I don't know what questions I need to be asking either - insurance is obvious, but what else?

Please be as basic as you like - I've never done this before.
to be honest with you and if you want things done properly, do it yourself - a lot cheaper as well. i've moved seven times so far in seven years (RUDDY forces!) and on the second occassion i had a company do - they were awful (whites in pompey). took my friend and i two days to pack, deliver and unpack on our own. this way you only do what you can manage each time. we're moving him next weekend in a van with a tail lift - a mustif you want to save your back

It is tempting to do it ourselves, but being our first ever move, I know I'll forget something!

Hire the van the day before and start to pack that evening, you can then finish off in the morning. We got everything in a Luton van, plus I'm sure if you've got a couple of friends with large cars, they would help you too. You'll save yourself so much money plus you know nothing will get damaged.
