windows media/Xbox codec issue

Hi i have just got a new laptop with vista on, i have hooked it up to the Xbox and have been able to view photos on it just fine. however the media centre does not seem to be able to reconise any of my videos on either the xbox or the media centre on my pc, i normally use vlc anyway so have never had to worry about codecs.

my question is this...

if i find a codec pack (recomendations please) will all my content work on my pc and xbox? i have a lot of avi, mvk, dvix etc etc.

can anyone help?

Had similar problems trying to stream movies from my Dell laptop running vista just a few months ago.

I had a read through a few threads over on AV forums...try here

I then googled DivX and the 1st one that came up has been spot on...divx link Note, I downloaded the freebies!

I preferred to use media player for streaming, dunno why, but just couldn't get media centre to work very well.

Hope the links help, they've worked for me, just not sure how they've worked. If you need any further assistance perhaps someone with a better working/technical knowledge will be along later!
