(Bad) New T&C's for Nationwide Accounts!!

Hi all

I have a Nationwide current account which I use when I travel abroad as they do not charge for internation transaction - well guess what??

They are scrapping the no charge promise!

I got a letter in the post this morning and their terms and conditions are changing as of 1st of June 2009 - so this means that after this date, they will be charging us for using our cards abroad!

there is a weblink for all the countries that you will be charged for using your card abroad - but I can't post it, so please visit the nationwide website for more info, just add foreigntransactions to the end of their normal website address.

I hope there is another bank out there that won't charge for international transactions anymore!

Anyways, I hope some people find this info useful...

Most of us know about this already. It's been discussed on this forum loads of times. And if you read the small print, they are only passing on the 1% charge that comes from Visa, they are not adding the 2.75% charge that most banks levy.

So, whilst Nationwide cards won't be completely free to use, they will still be cheaper than nearly all of the other banks or building societies.

And it's only outside Europe that you'll be charged at all.

And cheaper than getting cash from M&S or Travelex before you go, too.

Well, I for one found this helpful as I only learned of these change in T&C's when I got the letter in the post. So I believe the sarcasm was uncalled for too. If its been on here before then simply put a link to the other thread and that will be that.

Probably no links supplied because it would take all day to post them seeing as there are literally dozens of threads on the subject, on this and the credit card forum.
Still, the OP is new(ish) so maybe can be forgiven for that.

The BBC reported on this well over a month ago. They are only passing on the cost from Visa that they used to absorb, as everyone has said, still a better rate than the other banks. From the article you will see the change has been prompted by Visa increasing the charge.
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.
