It doesn't take much to get a Council computer system to "blacklist you". I pay all my Council tax bills monthly using online banking not a standing order as my husband's pay hits the joint account on different days. For my holiday cottage non-domestic rates, the account number I quote with each payment has only 8 digits, but my bank insists I type 10 as that's what the Council wants. So I added 2 zeroes to the start of the number. Most months it's fine, but occasionally I get a letter saying I haven't paid and need to settle the rest of the year by return. A quick phonecall and asking them to check their suspense account normally sorts it and I go back to paying it in exactly the same way.

Maybe if the councils spoke to the banks, things would be better, or is this just wishful thinking....?

Just an update, and it is sorted - for now. They refused to accept any problem with the computer system they use for rent payments (going back on what I was told previously), demanded the full amount immediately and told me that if I didn't go to the bank and pay in full at the office (they also asked the cashier to contact them when I did so) that they would serve notice there and then.

I'm more annoyed that the council has taken the attitude of being omnipotent and that they are not to blame for anything even though they previously admitted that the problems were their fault.

There is a scheduled payment going out tomorrow. If that has a problem as it did last month, I'll go down on Wednesday before work and refuse to leave until something is done!

Do you yet know if it is a direct debit or a standing order. This is vital.

And have you considered talking to your local councillor. They do surgeries most weeks. Go and see them.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

The next payment will be by standing order (as its the first payment after the change in rent from April as per section 103 of the Housing Act 1985), as organised before this problem kicked off.
