Sony Surround sound packed up - can I buy just the 'box' and not all the speakers?

We have a superb Sony surround sound system which is about 10 years old, the speakers are fantastic - especially the woofer, but now it keeps cutting in and out - as if it's overheated or something.

Everywhere I go seems to sell complete systems, with speakers and all, we don't want to replace the speakers, especially as they are all wired in behind the coving and wires bedded in the plastering down the wall! It seems a waste to buy the whole lot, can I just buy a new 'box of tricks'?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

If you go to any dedicated hi-fi shop, they’ll have separate surround-sound decoder/amplifiers – basically, any shop that sells hi-fi separates. Here are some examples from Richer Sounds. I’m not suggesting you necessarily get one from Richer Sounds, but it gives you the idea. You can also look on manufacturers’ websites for models, and then look for the lowest prices on the price comparison websites. Also, if you’re passing WH Smiths or similar, pop in and look at the hi-fi magazines for recommended products.

www.superfi.co.uk are pretty good on prices. I got some Mission speakers there gallons cheaper than anywhere else i could find (even loads cheaper than Ebay)
