Going over your credit card limit charges

I recently took my card to Australia for emergency use only...and had to use it for an emergency. I assumed that once I reached my credit card limit (of £5,000) I would no longer be able to use it. Unfortunately this didnt happen, so I thought that I was still within the £5,000 and kept on using it. When I got back home I had a letter telling me I had gone £1,000 over the limit and they were charging me a fee for the privilege. I fully realise I should have known how much I was spending, but I was away for quite a long time and didnt have my statement with me, so just thought I was still within my limit. What is the point of having a limit if they allow you to go so far over it? Is this allowed? And why should I then have to pay them a fee for allowing me to do it?

Of course it is allowed as it was unauthorised, also to be honest i'd just pay it and learn from this because they could have blocked your card at the limit and as you say you needed emergency cash, you would have been stranded so its a small price to pay in my opinion.
Just think, they kinda done you a favour in a weird sort of way.... :eek:2010 - year of the troll
