That what was I going to say. If she keeps getting out and your neighbours complain you could end up at best having a visit from your local dog warden at worse a big kennel bill from the dog warden or someone else picking up your dog as a stray.

Unfortunatly this is really becoming a problem as the dog can't live inside, there are various threads floating about about why but it really isn't an option. she's a problematic animal with various behavioural issues that attempts at fixing have failed.

I've worked out how she's getting out, she is indeed scaling the 7ft fence so for now i have her tied up on a rope attached to a tree in the center of the pen which is long enough that she can get to all area's of the pen but no long enough to get over the fence.

She is still really sick right now she looks terrible she's lost loads of weight but the tumour that developed hasn't gotten any bigger since the inital vet's visit.

We've been taking her back once a month to have it cheked about and the vet still says she bouncy enough and still isnt happy about putting her to sleep from a health point of view as she doens't seem to be getting any worse.

Unfortunatly to be fair at this point i think perhaps putting her to sleep might be the next step as i don't want to keep her tied up as it seems overly cruel she just sit's and whimpers (and i can't blame her) and i can't see another way of keeping her in the pen.

I know it sounds awful she's not a nasty dog and atm she seems content to get out have a wander around the street then come back and bark at my front door to let me know how clever she is.

Im more concerned that if she got abit adventurous and wandered abit further got lost or scared i couldn't be sure she'd be ok and might do something out of panic as kids and strangers scare her ... and child/strangers terrify her more than most.

im going to try and put some sort of roof on the pen this week if i can figure out a way, but sadly if she got out and bit a child i'd never forgive myself so putting her to sleep might be the only option left.

Everyone keeps telling me not to feel bad about it i did more for her than most would have, if i'd taken her back to the rescue she would have been put to sleep 10years ago still i don't feel any better about it.

Im just disraught im seriously running out of options.

    What about something like this?

I know this is an American company (and they are excellent to do business with) but I'm sure I've seen the same things for sale in the UK. It doesn't look like it would be too difficult to make one either, if you are the crafty type. It would certainly be better than having to tie her up.

leila, I was not aiming at you there. I used to think exactly the same way as the poster who posted about the dog getting hurt myself until someone pointed out to me "what about the drivers of cars!!!".

Also you say that your dog is really sick at the moment. Does she need a vet perhaps to take a look again???. Maybe if she has a tumour and its not getting better (with the weight loss etc) then it would be kinder to have her put to sleep. I hope you get this all sorted.

Sorry i guess im feeling touchie :(

The dog's very sick, she had a tumour removed back in november, but a second one developed and i was told 2 months ago i had maybe 12weeks of life with her and having it removed wouldn't change much other than drag out the inevitable. However this said other than a drop in her weight she hasn't got any worse in that time and the vet still feels she's happy.

The dog as a whole is a sensitive subject, she's a rescue that wasn't what we imagined and i've fought pretty much everyone to give her some kind of life.

Still if she has a tumour and the vet thinks she will die from it then surely its kinder to have her put to sleep than living outside like she is now and you getting upset (as you are) by it too. My mum had her dog put down with one too. It was sad but it was also sad to see him suffering too. I would not hesitate if I had a dog that was suffering. You have obviously given the dog your best and no-one should judge you for that. Its very difficult with rescue dogs.

I hope you make the right decision for your dog.
  • What are the behavioural reasons that the dog cannot live indoors? surely any behavioural issue will be worsened by isolating the dog further?

You still haven't said how much exersize she gets.
