Double glazing - idea of cost

Hi everyone,
My wife and I are saving up to have our house re-glazed as the current glazing is draughty and insecure. So that we have a vague idea of how much we need to save up before we get proper quotes in, can someone suggest a guideline price for the following, given that we're based in south Essex, near Basildon?
We will, of course, get three quotes at the time we come to place an order. Family have recommended the local company Masterlite but does anyone have any further suggestions or do any of the MSEers operate in our area?
Here are the measurements I took this morning (width x height)...
DOWNSTAIRS
Porch: 1340 x 2020 unit with front door and 2 panel window (no openings, except letterbox!) built into the side*
Porch: 620 x 1020 window - 2 panels with top opening*
Lounge: 2370 x 1330 bay window, comprising:
380 x 1240 - side opening single panel*
1630 x 1240 - main panel plus 2 openings at the top*
380 x 12400 - side opening single panel*
Dining: 2050 x 1960 French doors - possibly full width, or if this is too much then fixed panels either side with French doors in the middle
Kitchen: 760 x 1990 back door - standard style with two panels of glass
Kitchen: 530 x 940 window - 2 panels with top opening
UPSTAIRS
Bed 3: 1200 x 1190 - 3 panels with side and top above side opening*
Bath: 1180 x 1000 - full width top opening with privacy glass in whole window
Bed 2: 1780 x 1190 - 3 panels with side and top opening
Bed 1: 1780 x 1190 - 4 panels with two side openings and top opening*
*These windows should have diamond lead-lighting, if possible, but again it depends on price. How much extra would this be?
Front door will ideally be a composite door, described on a number of websites as 2 panel, 2 square but this depends on price. What would be the price difference between this and an equivalent standard white door?
Thanks in advance for your help - if you need any more info then please let me know.

Hi Dave
I don't know about costs (others can advise) but I can recommend a company called "Betterview" who operate in Kent and Essex (Wickford I think). We used them recently for replacement fascias/soffits/guttering, new windows and a back door.
After experiencing the ridiculous sales tactics from other companies we got to quote, the Betterview approach was very refreshing (ie no silly gimics or sales pressure and proper written quotes). In addition they came out significantly cheaper than the others ("Anglian" and "Britelite") and we are very pleased with the end results (couldn't fault the guys based in Tonbridge).0 -
Hi,
Thanks for the tip RE. Betterview. I've heard of them so I'll look them up.

I've just had 2 quotes for my full house (except front door) of 17 windows (various sizes) + 2 French doors in Norwich from 2 companies; the first started at around 6800 but dropped very quickly to 6200. The second started at around 5800 and dropped quickly to 5200.
What impressed me with both of them, was that neither was a 'salesman'. Which they actually said on their respective adverts but I was sceptical of; they simply came in, went around and quickly measured, calculated the price and gave it to me in writing, got up to leave and said "if you need anything else, please let me know". No pressure, nothing. After getting the second quote, I phoned the first to let him know about the lower quote to give him the opportunity to negotiate. He declined. This didn't overly concern me as I was happy with both.Marching On Together

Thanks BritRael. Were they national companies or local ones? If national, which ones? If local then I guess you're too far away!0

I live quite a distance away from you and used a local company but I can give you an idea of cost based on many quotes I got.I would work it out using an average of £300 per unit,e.g. a bay with 3 panes and one opener(4 units) would cost around £1,200.Counting each seperate window, door, opener as a unit you need about 27 units.
So I think yours should work out a bit over £8,000 with everything, door, patio door, bay window etc.
BritRael,s cheapest quote works out at just under £280 a unit so different areas of the country look to be about the same on that estimate. My £300 a unit is based on the best quotes I got,I did have silly quotes too,one guy wanted £18k for something we ended up paying £5k for.You get chancers everywhere.
I definately echo everything said about sales tactics. The company we ended up using was quick and to the point,no sales patter for hours on end. They gave us their best price and left it with us to contact them if we wanted to go ahead. We had some crackers though,I wish I had filmed them,Zenith and Weatherseal I would avoid like the plague if I were you."Reaching out to touch the stars dont forget the flowers at your feet".0 -

yw.
Both were local. Been in business quite a while (20 years or so) and both do a lot of local work (numerous boards where work has been done). Never tried a national company as they seem to get such press due to over-pricing and hard-sell tactics, which I wanted to avoid. I was very pleasantly surprised!
Good luck.Marching On Together

I was told £100 per sq metre, eg if window is 2.8m2 cost is £280.
Plus £35 per opening
Plus any extras like toughened glass, leaded lights etc
Then about £200 labour for fitting (less for small window more for big)
I was told this by my builder who did my windows for this price so this is probably a bit of an over calculation which allowed him to take his cut0 -
I looked a neighbours house who have identical frontage and asked them who did their windows and if they were happy.
I paid £3500 for supply and fitting of:- Two curved bay windows (in effect 5 units ) which span about 12 ft. I have one big opener in the middle and 3 small vents in the top. We only had the big opener to give us a safe exit in the event of a fire from every room. The small vents we only use one in the sitting room but the bedroom we will open all 3 in the summer.
- 1 bedroom window with a middle large opener and a vet opener. Width at a guess about 5'.
- Two side windows with single vents but included the retention of original stained glass windows.
I recently bought just 1 window for bathroom. 1/2 & 1/2 tilt and turn with opaque glass supply only £200 size 1200 x 1000~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)
