Stats Question - Please Help!

Hi,
Could someone please help me with an urgent stats question.
I've done an ANCOVA test in SPSS and I have found that my covariant is significant....
i.e. independent variable has an effect on my Dependent variable. (as expected).
and now I learn the interaction independent variable*co-variant is significant.
Does this mean that I can no longer say the independent variable is affecting the dependent variable?
Any help greatly received.
