Toner For Laser Printer

I have a Brother HL1440 laser printer, it is printing a grey shadow over my pages, I assume the toner needs replacing. Is it best to stay with a branded cartridge or not and where is the cheapest place to buy whichever option.

Sounds like the drum unit needs replacing.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

How long have you had the machine and how much work does it do?

A couple of years but very light domestic use. I did have a HP Laserjet p4 before the Brother, it was parallel connection and ran for years with great results and no problem.

The Brothers have a very short toner and drum life, I look after some Brother printers in my line of work, HL-4040N and the 2070N, does the machine have an LED on the top or front panel to indicate the status of the toner/drum etc?

Yes, but not showing a problem. Aghhh, after a second closer look the toner light is OK but the drum light is half illuminated.

What is the difference between drum and toner, are they bought together as a unit, or are they different.

The drum is a seperate unit, the toner sits inside of it, it is very easy to swap it out.

  • Don't forget to take out the toner cartridge and give it a gentle shake to-and fro so that the toner gets an even distribution. You will get a little extra life out of it. As for drum cartridge, this usually takes longer to replace, and is usually more expensive.

A drum unit will cost you about £60 and the toner will cost between £40 and £60 depending on who you choose to supply.

Does the drum unit include the toner cartridge.
