Brighthouse Insurance?

Hi all,

Im sorry if this is in the wrong place, please move if it is

My girlfriend has her fridge/freezer, tv and wii from Brighthouse, all with insurence.

After taking great inspiration from this site and CCCS I began looking at all her bills, I noticed she's paying £32 a month insurance on these items and stupidly we dont have contents cover for the house so I looked into contents cover and with accidental cover for the tv (the most expensive item) and several other benefits house insurance is only £16.28 a month.

So I sent her on her way to Brighthouse to cancel all insurance's so in 3 weeks we would have the deposit for contents cover and begin a covered household, anyway she returned from Brighthouse and they told her you could not cancel the cover on any items until we can prove we have additional cover, is this right? it doesnt ring true or legal to me, I might be massivly wrong and it may be a great way to make additional money for the company?

Any comments are appreciated, cheers

    Hi there Scott

I'm sure she should be able to cancel.
Have you still got the terms and conds for this policy, it should say something on them about the cancellation procedures.

But after having a read through I cant see anywhere that it says I have to have my own insurance to allow me to cancle their overpriced policy?

    Not a problem.;)

I think if there is lack of paperwork and this was purchased within the last 5/6 years, no longer, it may be a good idea to request for a Subject Assess Request (SAR), they have 40 days to comply and should send everything requested on the SAR letter, there is a template link below for this letter.
But there is a charge of £10 cheque or postal order payment for this request, it may be worth it though to help through the case, good luck.;)

  • We've only had the items a year or so, so I should hope/think it wouldnt be too much trouble to get the paperwork!

An intersting post on the blagger website from a poster called "Lofty" saying the policy can be cancelled at anytime and another post claiming that any monies paid for the policy can be claimed back? I hope this is the case, if it is I can see it being a hard fought battle as they are already strongly claiming the policy can not be cancelled!

I think Brighthouse are trying it on myself.

If they don't resolve this I would take this to the Financial ombudsman service (FOS), I'm sure these will.

Yes interesting site that, I have checked that for myself with different things and surprising what we can find out about these companies.;)

  • I bought a tv from Brighthouse in December and was told I had to take out insurance unless I could provide proof I was insured for home contents already. Stupidly, I am not insured. So I took out the Brighthouse insurance and was told I was also covered for accidental damage. I was told if anything went wrong with the tv, it'd be repaired, or replaced if it would not repair. I didn't think this was a bad deal. However, I accidentally knocked the tv and the screen went haywire. I rang Brighthouse and they said someone would be out to collect it to take it for repair. They could not lend me a tv in the interim, they said, because I had damaged it myself and it was not a fault with the actual tv. One week later, when I rang Brighthouse for a progress report, I was told the tv was now not being repaired because "the company who made it doesn't provide new screens any more". Unlike normal insurance cover for accidental damage, however, I am apparently not covered to get a replacement tv. All I can do is go make a claim, they get the tv back and the remainder of the HP agreement is cancelled as a result. So although I don't owe them anything afterwards, nor do I have a tv & I am £350 down the drain. They told me I could then take out a new HP agreement for another tv! So after shelling out £350, I am then expected to start from scratch again, even though I have been paying for insurance cover including accidental damage! No thanks.

So sorry to hear this, and how frustrating this is for you.

However, they made you take out the insurance as you did not have adequate cover, even so, this should not matter anyway, so obviously they did not sell this in your interest.
I would complain and also now due to the fact that they cannot any longer repair the screen, this bit is not your fault.
Do you still have the policy booklet on this, such as what can be claimed for - for taking out their insurance?

Despite that, it maybe worth your while complaining and reclaiming on the way it was sold to you, after all this time its worthless to you, you have been out of pocket for this and no TV.

Here below is the link with templates and useful information, write your own reasons and they have 8 weeks to respond in full.
    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/ppi-loan-insurance

keep on at them until you receive the final response, they are I believe under the Financial ombudsman service (FOS) where they should add their details.
Keep us posted and ask for help when required, good luck.;)
