Passport expiry

My passport ends on the 30th Oct, but I'm due to go away on the 14th of April and the 11th of May. Will I be able to use it or need a new one? And how long does one take? i.e. if I applied now would it come before the middle of April?

Where are you going? I'm pretty sure that to go International (outside Europe) it needs to be within 6 months of the expiry date.

...and I don't know if the Post Office still do this as I did it years ago, but you used to be able to pay a small fee and the Post Office would help "fast track" it through the system.

It was so long ago that I can't remember the full details. I'll have a peek on the 'net and get back to you.

You can fast track it - the quickest being same day collection from the passport office, but that costs £90.

You can fast track it for a week, I think that's about £70

I got this from the https://www.adviceguide.org.uk website.
How long does it take to get a passport

    Standard service

If you complete the form correctly and enclose the correct documents and fee, you should receive your new or amended passport within three weeks. It can take longer. Current turnaround times are given on BBC Ceefax, ITV Teletext, and the Passport Service's website (https://www.passports.co.uk).

    Check and send service

The check and send service is available at selected post offices and worldwide travel agents. You should receive your new passport within two weeks of making your application.

    Fast Track service (one week)

The Fast Track service is available only at Passport Service counters and by appointment. This service guarantees a one week service for all straightforward, properly completed applications. The Passport Service returns the passport by post and allows two days' delivery time.

    Premium service (one day)

This service is available only at Passport Service public counters and by appointment. This service guarantees a one day service (this means a target turnaround time of four hours) for all straightforward, properly completed applications.

The Fast Track service is available for renewals, amendments and child extensions only. It is not available to people applying for a passport for the first time or for people whose passports have been lost, stolen or damaged.

you can fast track your application at the post office or I have in the past taken it directly to Liverpool and waited but obviously it depends on where you live.

I'd think you'd be exceptionally unlucky to have to wait til mid April before receiving your new passport.

Back in November I applied for a passport renewal to the Newport Passport Office. Posted it 1st class monday morning, received new passport 10am Thursday morning and I didn't pay the Rip Off PO checking service which apparently speeds the service up.

Most countries will permit you EXCEEDING your expiry date by up to 6 months. Best place to check is the respective embassy websites which will give you all the info you require.

Don't think I'll risk it for the biscuit by waiting nearer 6 months, think I'll get an application on Monday and send it off on the Tuesday - fingers crossed!
