I am in the same situation and am now applying for jobs up to 20k less than I was earning.

I can't really afford that sort of drop but I've been unemployed since November and anything is better than nothing. If I do get a job at a much lower salary I will try to move again as soon as the market improves.

I went from 41k down to 36k about five years ago, and from a 1 mile commute to about 20 miles each way. It did feel pretty bad at first. However the new employer were very happy with my performance and I was back up to 40k in less than a year at the new place. Not to mention I was much, much happier (better working environment). Don't let it put you off completely.

When I got made redundant in 2001 my gross salary was £21.5k pa. In 2009 I finally got back to that again. If this lower salary pays all your bills then don't fret too much.
  • I've just started a new job. The salary is a whole 51.2% of my previous salary.

That said, I'm enjoying it, have drastically curtailed my travelling time (though travelling costs have gone up) and I do have other options should this job not work out.

    Count your blessings.
