I used work in IT for a big company with several years of experience in my specialized area. I was made redundant in February and managed to get a job (after applying for 100 jobs) in April but with 33% less salary

I understand in recession it is very difficult to get a same paying job but did anyone go to that low salary?

:o

I haven't got a job as of yet, but the jobs I am applying for are a lot less than what I was on previously. (I was made redundant in March).

It's one of those things unfortunately, but i'd rather have a lower paid job (within reason) than no job at all at the moment.
    Grocery challenge - Nov: £52/£100
  • I went from £16k gross to £13k gross but I like my new job as opposed to the old one which was nasty and stressful. Take home though it has a massive impact as I pay into the pension in my new job as it is one of the best company pensions in this country. So my takehome is only £880 and I used to bring home £1110 a month so it's a BIG difference of £260 per month, plus I used to walk to work but now I use a bus and a train so that's another £66 a month so I am £326 per month down. So in actual fact, if we base it on takehome per month and the unavoidable committments then I changed my job and I am at a loss (if we include my pension being 44years away from getting) then my takehome as seen a downturn of approx 34%!

So yeah-I am on par with you there love xx

I hardly call two-thirds of your previous salary 'low'. And it is infinitely higher than the salary of 'zero' that many made redundant have been offered.

Perhaps if you take the time to brush up on your grammar your next career move will yield a higher remuneration.

As the first poster said, its supply and demand.

Right now, out there in the job seeker world, there is someone who will do the job for a lower salary than you.

  • Is is a pretty normal reduction in the current climate I'm afraid.

Kimyeovil there are many who would argue your post is not grammatically correct whereas movilogo appears to have made typos, fairly acceptable for quickly posting a message on a notice board. ;)

It is supply and demand but unfortunately for the IT sector it's not totally due to the recession.

IT was often seen as a in demand sector and the pay reflected it, then you got all these companies you see on TV offering training programs into IT and this basically flooded the market. The likes of PC World and Carphone warehouse didn't do much for the IT sector with the advent of the Geek squad, if stores can offer cheap IT support, it's then expected across the sector. Of course now you've got a recession on and greater unemployment this has made it worse.

Even before the recession the pay drops in IT have been upto 50%. Although I have noticed a drop in standards with the average IT guy not being able to solve some of the more difficult problems.

Saying that even in normal times employers will trying it on and if you aren't currently in employment it's not uncommon to drop the salary.
