Can anyone suggest an alternative operating system for a 2G Surf Eee PC?.
I know there are a few out there that will work with it if I use an SD card but I would like a version that does not require a card.
Thanks in advance.

WindowsXP?
Taking out the non urgent stuff it will be 1.5-1.7gb in storage.0 -
any linux based ones e.,g. debian / ubuntu, puppy, kubuntu
or hacked versions of xp (too make it smaller) its called TinyXPSilenced by the Gestapo :rotfl:0 -
Looking around, it looks like you'll struggle to fit any of the fully-blown distros on a 2Gb drive. For example the latest Ubuntu Netbook Remix (version 9.04 of which was released yesterday) is designed for a 4Gb drive capacity, and Ubuntu Easy Peasy (what was Ubuntu EEE) seems to be based on the same remix. I also don't think even Xubuntu will fit.
However, DamnSmall or Puppy will probably both be ok, if you can live with a rather minimal user interface...0 -

Thanks for the advice, don't really want to pull out the money for an XP license and my research so far found that most alternative OS are for the 4Gb model. I'll give Puppy a try. Have experimented with DSL before and could not get away with it.0 -
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL LINUX ON AN ASUS LAPTOP
Not unless you know what you are doing.
I installed it on my Asus laptop and the drivers for wireless do not work properly.
Essentially installing the linux driver is fairly simple if you follow the instrucitons on internet forums, but for some reason Linux turns the wirless OFF on boot. Linux then uses FN-F2 for something else so you can't use this key combo to turn it back on.0 -
Thanks for the warning, it already runs the Xandros version specific to the Eee PC and the guides I've read so far suggest that Linux will be fine as long as the wireless is turned ON before beginning the installation of the new OS.0

I put 'PCLinuxOS 2009' on my ASUS, got WiFi working in less than 1 minute.
Theres also a version of PCLOS specially for the Eee, its called 'EeepcLinuxOS'. Last time I looked, they had almost got the WiFi working, however, as it uses an 'Atheros' chipset for this, they will have fixed it by now as Atheros released Linux drivers for their chipsets recently.Never Knowingly Understood.
