Yes you can both claim carers allowance for each other and you would both get the carers premium on top of your income support.
The only thing stopping you would be a moral issue as if you are so disabled that you get middle rate care you are not really in a position to care for someone else 35 hours per week and it is possible that the dla people find out and review your care needs. I am only playing devils advocate here and it is totally up to you what you do many people do just that.0 -
My parents both get Attendance Allowance and Carer's Allowance. They have their own individual needs but also support each other. For example, if one of them has to go into hospital, someone else has to stay at the house overnight. Neither could manage to live alone.
Work out what it is that you and your daughter do for each other in the way of care. As long as this doesn't contradict the information you gave in order to get your DLA award, you should be alright.
I think it would affect your IS payment so check this before you put in an application.0 -
Just think carefully before considering this as it could affect your current level of DLA.
eg. if someone claims they cannot cook meal etc then claim carers allowance for cooking for someone else this could be evidence against you as the decision makers can see what other benefits you get.0 -
hi, thanks..i can,t do much at all ,the only thing i do for my daughter is talk to her and talk on the phone for her/sort her bills out..so i don,t think carers is for me ,,but she does a lot for me,,cooking helping me move etc,,,so i guess she could claim for caring for me,,but she is on income support, if she claimed carers would they stop the equivelent from her or my income support....does anyone know how much carers allowence is weekly as well.0

Carer's Allowance is currently £53.10 BUT as your daughter is on I.S. she will only get the Carer's Premium increase of £29.50 as CA is treated as income.
As you are single but living with someone I don't know whether you'd be entitled to the Disability Premium on your own I.S which is £27.50 but once your benefit centre knows you are on DLA they'd do it anyhow I think if you are. Someone who knows about IS will hopefully correct/confirm.0 -

When you claim carers THE only question is"do you provide 35 hours or more per week of care"
Maybe but I just cannot understand how people do not feel guility for claiming carers meaning they cook/clean etc for someone else whilst claiming DLA for themselves claiming not to be able to do the above. The system is mad for allowing this to happen.0 -
it is quite possible for two people to be caring for each other and be entitled to carers, say one person can't cook etc and needs help getting about, and the other person is capable of doing such things but has mental health problems which mean they need encouragment to do things etc, both of those people could be carers after all you don't need to be able to get around to be there to offer support etc.
A carer doesn't have to just DO things for people it can be about just been there to ensure the other is safe.0 -

It's a huge problem, and should be looked at carefully. I'm very, very surprised that such a cross claim isn't thoroughly investigated and checked out - like the example a while ago on here, there are definitely cases where people are claiming that they're too ill/disabled to do something - but then claim that they can care for another person.
Even where it's a neuro/physical crossclaim - if the person is claiming that they provide care for the person when the person with neurological problems cannot care for themselves, while claiming that they can't make a meal - something is seriously wrong with the checks. From Poland...with love.

The books are sitting just there on the floor.0
