The best of both worlds - is it possible?

Hi - i am new to this forum and therefore haven't had the time to read through all the threads in detail so I apologise is this is already covered elsewhere!

I have an Amex Nectar card which I am using for all our spending in order to build up our Nectar points quicker. I don't pay any interest as I pay the balance off in full every month.

My plan for earning while we spending was working wonderfully until we realised that Amex was not accepted in quite a few of our usual local haunts (restuaraunts, shops, post office, etc...).

As this has been happening more and more I have decided to look into getting another credit card that would be accepted in these places.

My ideal situation would be to get a new credit card (probably a cashback card) and use it for all our day-to-day spending. At the end of each month I would hope to pay the full balance off of the new card with my original Amex Nectar card (in order to continue earning the Nectar points) and then pay the Amex Nectar card off from my normal cash account.

So, I suppose my question is - can I regularly pay the monthly balance off of another credit card using my Amex Nectar card? If so, would this be a good way of having my cake and eating it or is it just an idea that's to good to be true?

Grateful for any advice!

You mean balance transfer to the AMEX nectar card? I think this won't work, even if does you'll end up paying a transfer fee (around 3%).

Perhaps look for a rewards card that is based on the Visa/MasterCard network, i.e. MBNA Rewards etc.?

No - you can'y pay a credit card with a credit card unless you do a balance transfer and this incurs fees

You can arrange to transfer a balance to another credit card (this normally attracts a BT fee of 2-3% of the balance shifted), but you cannot pay a credit card bill with another credit card. The bank will only accept debit card payments, cash or cheques.
People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.
  • OK - thanks everyone. I thought this might be the case so wanted to check before I went ahead and got a new card.

I think I will have to bite the bullet and ditch the Amex card in favour of a Visa/MasterCard as SkyRider says.

    Thanks for the advice!
