Can I be so bold as to query this.
I've been looking on the net and it says a renewal is a new 12 month contract and the cooling off period applies.
Perhaps the law is complication in this area and I've misunderstood

Looking around the web it seems that it varies. I have found some providers that do give a 14 day cancellation rights period and others that dont. I will take a look in the COB later if no-one beats me to it.

Nothing in COB http://fsahandbook.info/FSA/html/handbook/ICOBS/7/1 (or 7.2)

From what I can see on the net this is law (or at least FSA rules) and a renewal is a new contract.
So are they being naughty or are they interpreting he rules/law in their favour?

I dont know. Its not my area so hopfully one of the regs who does transact in that area will be along soon to say.

The most common "intrepretation" you can find is that they offer cancellation rights on renewals but can charge for time covered and an admin charge (as long as its published) if you cancel within the period.

If the OP had take out alternative cover that ran from the renewal date they just have to send proof of this into NU and they should lapse their policy and drop the charge

If they did not have concurrent cover then they would have expected NU to pay any claims for that period so the charge could possibly be right but you could try using the cooling off period
  • Actually I'm about to have an interesting conversation with essential travel who decided to renew my travel insurance without asking me I'll let you know how it goes.
