Help I tried to do a clean install and now my Mac is telling me to PANIC

I have just upgraded and want to pass on my old G4 Powermac so I tried to do a clean install on it and I've messed up - BIG TIME
It's one of the last G4s that could run both OS9 and OSX (I'm using Tiger) from the same hard drive.
I started up from the OSX install disc and went through the install procedure.
That seemed to go OK, until it restarted.
All I'm getting now is a grey screen with a tiny, old style smilie Mac logo and some text.
I can't see all the text as it disappears off the screen, most of it is gobblegook to me anyway, but the bits I can read say -
1) Unable to find driver for this platform: PowerMac 3.1
2) de!!!!!! configured - dumping de!!!!!! information
3) Panic: We are hanging here
Well I am - Panicking that is
Any here would be greatly appreciated, I've tried all the tricks I know, without and without the install disc, using keyboard shortcuts to start up in both OS9 and OSX and I get the same text every time.

Boot it off the CD, run Disk Utilities and update the driver... see if that helps...0

It doesn't get as far as booting up.
I put the cd in, pressed the start button and get the chimes, then almost instantly that message appears.
Any keys I can press while it's doing that, that will make it see the cd?0 -
Re-boot, CD in, hold down the C key on the keyboard and it'll boot from the CD...0

The mouse button held down at boot time usually ejects a CD/DVD, the C key forces it to boot from the disk providing there is a valid system on it, so if you put in the OS X install or disc tools (if you have a separate CD/DVD), reboot and hold down C until it starts.
Apple+Option+P+R zaps the PRAM (clears all preferences/settings), which might help, you won't cause a problem trying it.
Also if you hold down shift, it'll boot with no additions, but if it's not getting to the boot stage, this is not much use.0 -
Was it running OSX before?
Was it running this version (ie Tiger, Leopard) of OSX before?
There are some firmware updates for some of the older Macs that are needed before installing OSX I think. Maybe if you could get OS9 installed you could get the firmware updated from there. Have a look on the Apple website.0
