Please Help Me - Bought Car Without Full Logbook

I think I have made a huge mistake. I have bought a car from a small local dealership. I have the receipt, but the full logbook was not available for me to sign supposedly because of a registration plate transfer - it had a private plate on. I have only got the 2nd part of the document. The car has both sets of keys. I paid by debit card. He said the full logbook will come to me in the post, but how when I haven't signed it?

What should I do?

  • Don't worry it is normal. The log book should arrive within 3weeks!

And what about HPI? There was outstanding finance on it. The garage assured me this was settled as part of the trade in and has given me a copy of the settlement quote and a photocopied payment stub. Can a dealer legally sell on a car if there is outstanding finance on it?

Standard processing time for a logbook is 2-4weeks, however if there is a cherished transfer application too (by the previous keeper) then it's anything up to 8weeks as it has to be processed twice.

  • Why don't you ring the finance company and ask if there is still finance on it?

The name and number of the company and the agreement no. should be on the HPI.

I shouldnt worry.... I think you will be ok.. If you got a copy of the settlement, then you should be ok, but, i would confirm that with the finance company.

I brought my girlfriend a car last year, HPi clear, but the women hpi'ed it, then re financed it that day, and secured it to the car..

In result, lost my car to the bailifts, as she stopped paying as soon as we took the car... Gutted...

Log Book issue is fine, take ten working days to transfer a plate.. If its a well established business and not a fly by night one you are fine!

if you were unsure about any aspects of the sale why did you buy it?
You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.

I wasn't unsure about things until afterwards when I started to panic. I bought in good faith from an established dealer (20+ years) with almost 60 cars in stock. The finance thing is really stressing me out.

Pretty sure the dealer would have checked any outstanding finance. He would not want a car sat on his property which has cost him money possibly being taken away.
