Thumbnails not showing properly on Vista

Ok, I'm tearing my hair out with this.
Running an HP laptop, IE7, and Vista basic, and am having trouble viewing thumbnails on sites like ebay.
The thumbnail views are appearing as the "red X"
I've tried clearing the thumbnail cache using disk cleanup, adding the sites to my trusted sites list and the "show pictures" box is checked in advanced internet options.
I'd appreciate if anyone can shed any light on why the thumbnails aren't showing up as they should.
