I've got a chip in my windscreen...

and I can't get it done for free because my insurance isn't fully comp (I will be upping to fully comp when it's my renewal date in September.

The chip itself is about 1.5mm diam with a small network of little cracks which probably measure about 5mm across at the most. It's about 40mm away from the edge of the screen. ( a pine cone fell on the windscreen )

I think it will cost me about £60 quid with autoglass to get it done, but is there a more moneysaving way? I wasn't sure whether araldite or even (possibly) clear nail varnish might do the trick on such a small chip?

Any help gratefully recieved,

Silaqui

Some insurers let you add windscreen cover to your policy for about £30.

Don't use Autoglass as they are the most expensive, there are plenty of smaller companies that will do it for a fraction of the cost. As a guide the last time I used Highway Glass they charge circa £20 if you take you car to them or around £30 if they come to you. These prices were plus vat and you have to ring and make an appointment.

There is probably a treatment you can buy to do it yourself if you have a look around on the internet eg ebay but for the money I would get it done professionally

As you can see small cracks in the chip it is more than just a surface chip and needs to be injected with resin to stop it spreading.
There is a chance that it will never spread in the lifetime of you owning the car but are you willing to take that chance?
Glassweld do a good repair but they were about £50 last I heard.

Sounds too close to the edge of the screen to repair.
    Leave it until October.

Thanks for the advice, no I don't really want to leave it as I REALLY don't wanna have to fork out for a whole new windscreen! I did a bit of googling but nothing seems to be coming up in my local area, and nobody at work seems to know of a company. I wonder if the local garages might?
I will give the insurance company a call at the weekend and see if I can add the cover, I'd imagine I will have to wait for while before I can claim on it though?

    Thanks everyone

Very few companies offer windscreen as an option for non comp policies and for some unknown reason the ones that do only let you add it on when you first take the policy out or when you renew the policy

I must be lucky. Ecarinsurance.co.uk and Admiral both let me add it to TPFT.

I have a chip in my windscreen that is about 1 cm across and have had for about a year. A repair company in the carpark of my local Homebase said it needed fixing. I asked my local garage, who do my MOT, and they said that it wouldn't fail an MOT (and it didn't a few months later). If you have a garage you trust ask them the question. If it isn't a fail, leave it.

You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.
