Annoying Neighbours Question

Hi All,

I am posting a question here on behalf of my parents so please bear with me.

A new family has moved in next door to my parents, they have bought a 3 bedroom house and seem to have 10 people living there, they take up most of the spaces in the residents car park and are incredibly noisy slamming doors at night.

Who can I complain to about the overcrowding ? is there anything that can be done ?

Sensible answers please, I don't want this to turn into a rant or anti foreigners thread etc.

Thanks

    How are parking spaces allocated?

Free for all, park where you can find a space
  • Your local council may be able to help - private sector housing or equivalent - not sure what can be done about a privately owned property though.

Are you sure they bought it or did a landlord buy it and is renting it out?
If it's rented it would be easier to do something about it.

Perhaps a quiet word or request to keep the noise down / parking spaces clear would do some good?

Seconded, does the 'residents' parking area' have any allocated parking?

Slamming doors - could be escalated to the local council's environmental health dept. Folks should buy a diary and keep a note of trouble times.

Not sure if there's any overcrowding legislation - are the neighbours owners or renters? If they're renting a council property, the council may take an interest.... if they're renting privately, the landlord may not take kindly to 10 people crammed in and may be able to help....

I could suggest a few 'fighting fire with fire' tactics, but they're probably not appropriate for those of senior years.....

    Hiya...

Having worked in Local Authority Housing for some years, I deal with problems like this all the time.

As you have bought your property, there is really very little you can do (sorry.)
The slamming doors and noise nuisance may not be enough to warrant intervention by environmental health - but they SHOULD deffo keep a diary of ALL incidents. If you see that there really is a long term problem, and it's ongoing - and not sporradic, then you can contact the environmental Health dept and ask for them to do some noise monitoring. This entails having "listening" equipment in your property for a week or so at a time. If the officers feel that there REALLY is a noise nuisance, then they CAN invtervene - but to be honest - it's unlikely that slamming doors will fall into that category - it tends to be loud music, or shouting and screaming etc.

It may sound archaic, but overcrowding legislation is a bit mad... it allows something like 4 adults to each bedroom, and children count as half a person, or something - a long time since I did my Housing Law qualification so forgive me... Unless they have rented the property from the council or a Housing Association, there's little you can do. If you need to find out who the owner of a property is, you can do so for as little as about £3 from the Land Registry.

What I WOULD suggest is NOT retaliation - remember that ou have to live next door to these people. I would suggest that you rationally, and calmly speak to them - mention that sometimes the slamming of doors is an issue. Belive it or not, many "noisy" people REALLY don't realise they are being noisy - especially when they live in a mad household where there's loads of people all making noise too!

As far as parking goes, if there's no designated parking spaces, then it's 1st come 1st served - tough. They pay their road tax and so do you - you're both equally allowed to park where you can do so legally. If they're NOT paying car tax, then sometimes it can be worth "the authorities finding out that they're not paying it!"

    Sneeky? me? never!

I know it's probably not the answer you were hoping for - but it's how it stands legally!

I have terrible neighbours and I reached the end of my tether the other night and went round. I found they have been ok since then. Maybe just go round and have a word. Unless your gonna live in the middle of no where on your own theres always gonna be that one neighbour or house that drives everyone bonkers
