Debt due to problem with meter - advice please?
I moved in to a property in March 2007. A top floor flat of a house converted into two flats. Two days later I had Southern electric on my door threatening to disconnect my meter due to an outstanding debt. After explaining to them i had just moved in and having to have my tenancy agreement faxed through to confirm and set my name up on the new account.
Initally bills arrived, reasonable amounts and all seemed fine. Then in May 2008 I recieved a bill for £942.22.
After many phone calls and letters to Southern electric I found out that my meter was actually a sub meter running off the downstairs one and that they had been using readings from the downstairs meter to calculate my bill and then charging me for the whole building. So began a very long process of chsing SE and my landlord to have the meters split.
I have now moved out since then the meters have been split but SE are saying there is an outstanding balance of £1539.94 to be split between myself and the downstairs tenant. Although they have agreed that a payment plan will be avaliable i still feel this is unfair as i have spent a year trying to resolve the issue.
Any advice would be much appreciated!! Sorry its a bit long!

You did the right thin by getting the supply split to enable you to have own meter. Who's name was the account in...if it was yours then you are liable for the bill im afraid, is upto you to get money off the other tenant downstairs as suppliers do not get involved with third party issues and the tenant downstairs would be the third party. Hope that makes sense. If the account name is in the landlords name then it is upto you to discuss and sort who pays what as he would be classed as resposible for the account. One has to be fair though and pay there way!
to find out what your consumption was you only needed to write down everything running on electricity, bulbs, kettle etc and the wattage and approx length of time on and ring the supplier to ask them to work out what your consumption is and then ask them how much this would be in monetary value. I do hope this helps somewhat.0
