skint to me is having no money, no way of paying for anything no credit cards with space on no pennies in pots.0

i agree with most of the posters above. being only the middle of the month and having only a few pounds with which to buy food(including packed lunches), gas and electric:having to send the kids to school with nothing to eat and getting them to tell teachers mummy forgot and getting school dinners "on tick", not having seen a dentist for 5 years and not being able to eat certain foods in case your teeth break off: going to the hairdressers once a year - if im lucky and not being able to afford clothes even necessities such as uniforms and shoes.0

im a hairdresser by trade ... only do it on the side these days but just wanted to say that if you lived by me i would do your hair for free!!!!! cuz if a haircut etc would help make life a bit more pleasureable it would be worth it:EasterBun ...what more do I need to say?!

put things into perspective... Friends of mine (I used to live next to them) never had much money, always on a tight budget both working really ahrd as they had debts from earlier on. Yeah they were skint but their kids were lovd and they had each other. Got a call at 1 to say "are you sitting down?" The husband had been to hospital over night (still dunno what for) and as his wife has the 3 kids at home (well one is 16-17 but the other 2 are under 4) and so she couldn't come fetch him. He decided to take a cab home. He aparently fainted in the cab on the way home and he didn't wake back up. Skint? I think that's the least of her worries right now
Keep cuddling the OH since hearing as I am just so happy I have him - money worries are suddenly so insignificant...

I discovered "skint" two years ago when my friend - a single mother living in a council flat - came round to my house with a food parcel (Tesco value dried pasta and tinned tomatoes) just so I could eat for a couple of days.
I couldn't have sat there and listened to your friend, quite frankly, without getting a bit upset. Just image having £500 a month to spend on whatever you like!?!? And no matter how badly off I am, I don't believe in sitting moaning to friends about it - when I see people it's to enjoy their company, not to depress them. (This forum's different - it's designed for discussing these things!)

Tine - I like your comments... I know a lot of people with free cash who envy me because I always have a rich, happy life whatever the financial constraints! There are always people in worse-off situations whether here or abroad - we're lucky that the extremely vast majority in this country won't actually starve.Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
I think 'skint is a state of mind' is absolutely right. We all have different needs and income - as well as debt/credit available.
I was really skint when I was a student. I remember many weeks where I had to survive on £5 for everything except accomodation. That was hard and the only thing that kept me going was the prospect of graduating and getting a good job.
It's sad to look back now and see that the moment I got money in my hands, I didn't pay off my student debts etc. I decided to treat myself and enjoy not luxurious items but the ability to spend and not think about every penny. That's where I went completely wrong. I stopped thinking.
Anyway, like others, I don't think your colleague is skint but then, it's all relative

klare, thanks for your kind offer.the worse thing about not going to a hairdressers is the fact im going grey! ive had a few disasters with home bleaching kits so now leave well alone. having your hair done does make you feel a bit better about yourself i think.slash x0

I have 3 teeth that basically have holes going down to god knows where the fillings came out ( teeth were 70% filling 30 % tooth to give you an idea of the hole!) - i cant get registered with an NHS dentist and even if I could i couldnt even afford their fees, as for going private... not in this life time, and i now have another filling i can feel going as well, both me and the OH have needed prescriptions recently but couldnt have them as we have no money...
2. If you get WFTC or IS or similar benefits you can get a free prescription card.
3. My car has just failed its MOT too, so commiserations, unfortunately mine looks teminal. (Emissions, corrosion probs x 2, plus 6 advisories and there's an oil leak and the clutch is going - otherwise it's not bad for a car that's done 192k)A house isn't a home without a cat.
Those are my principles. If you don't like them, I have others.
I have writer's block - I can't begin to tell you about it.
You told me again you preferred handsome men but for me you would make an exception.

I think skint is when you have to count every penny, and that is an ongoing thing with no end in sight.
It's also of course not having enough to get to the end of the month, but really, if you have to budget for everything and count all the pennies to keep afloat, then that's skint in my book. DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j
