Money Paid into Closed Current Account

Hey there!
I had a Barclays Current Account which I had closed in the middle of 2008 (I don't remember the exact date). By closed I mean I went to the branch, they asked me for my debit card and cheque book, gave me all the money that was remaining in the account, and told me that the account was closed. There were no direct debits or any other charges in that account (as they had all been transferred to a new current account with another bank, and I had not used their debit card in many months)
For this account, I was charged £5 a month (when it was open!).
Last week, my dad by mistake transferred some money to the closed account. I told him not to worry, because the account was closed and I thought it should just bounce back or not be accepted. It turns out that the money never came back to his account. I walked into a Barclays branch, and a personal banker told me that my account had been overdrawn and there was less than the original amount that my dad had originally transferred.
I had to get back to work so could not pursue this immediatedly, but I wanted to hear from you more experienced folks if whether Barclays can legally do what they did: Allow money to be accepted into a closed account, and then claim I had been overdrawn on it?
Many thanks!

It sounds like they never properly closed the account and the £5 charges had taken it overdrawn. Complain big timefragfeaster777 wrote: »Hey there!

I agree with poster above but would make one comment. Did you not notice that you had not received a closing statement?0

Following on from this comment, then there should have been monthly statements each month after that. If the staff didn't alert you that there was pending interest at the time you withdrew your money then I'd definitely make a complaint and ask for the charges to be written off.jonesMUFCforever wrote: »I agree with poster above but would make one comment. Thanks for the replies!
No, I never received anymore monthly statements. When I "withdrew" the final money that I had in the account, it was basically the bank teller informing me I had x amount remaining in the bank account, would I like to have it in cash?
I will go through my documents again to find out if I had a closing statement: Thing is that I may have destroyed that statement (I know, you live and learn).
But say I can't find the closing statement, if Barclays decide to be difficult, would I have a credible case with the ombudsman?
Thanks again!0 -
Don't think Barclays would be difficult here. Just mention you gave in your cards and chequebooks, what branch it was done at.
If what you say is right, then it will even show the day they gave you a bit of cash "for the closure". Your story makes perfect sense. I guess they'll just write back saying Sorry All Sorted.Originally Posted by Dr Cuckoo3

Hi,
Another point to raise with regards to this issue is that you should check your credit report to see if barclays have recorded a late payment or default on the account, if they are saying that you have an overdraft on the account then this may be the case. If a late payment or default is recorded this will have some impact upon your credit worthiness and may cuase problems when applying for credit in the future, if it is recorded you need to contact barclays imediately to ask for it to be corrected. If it isn't then no need to worry just make sure everything is sorted and complain if necesseary.
Hope this helps
