The problem still exists as call centres are shifting to 0871 numbers instead. 0845 is still a joke - Ofcom need to repair a whole ship instead of plugging one tiny hole.

Makes you suspicious about 'insider dealing' by BT doesn't it?

Do you think they have a mole in Ofcom?

BTW, for those who don't get free 0845/0870 calls yet, the cheapest provider at the moment is usually 18185 (frequently via its 0808 1 703 703 gateway number) - see HERE. However, for evening 0870 calls, BT's price of 1
    ½p/minute is cheapest.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • AFAIAA, a few providers have already followed BTs 'lead' and included 0845/0870 in their inclusive calls packages.

According to OFCOM, those companies that will switch away from 0870 numbers to 0871/0844 numbers have already done so!

Ofcom are living in a dreamworld. Just another useless government department.

OFCOM are a total waste of space for the consumer. A bit like the FSA but with uglier people.

They couldn't regulate a light switch.
