Being counted down

We are using our laptop for the present time as our main computer as our old one "died". I used to use Quicken on the old one and I eventually found the disc and installed it on the laptop, but it keeps asking me to register when I log on to it and although I do, it takes no notice and is counting me down. It now says I can only use it 3 more times before registering. Will it shut down and not let me in?

Can anyone help me and tell me what to do. The Quicken I have installed is pre 2000 but it is fine for what I want.

If you can help could you explain it in easy terms as I am in my sixties and not computer savvy. Thank you.

Does it say anything when it stops you from registering?

Presumably your licence for Quicken is for use on one machine only. So if you try to register it online to a second PC using the same licence key, it will not allow you to do so. You would need to deregister it from the first PC, as otherwise you are technically breaking the licence terms
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    It's windows vista.

Ok here's what you need to do.
    Uninstall quicken.
    Reboot Laptop.
Reinstall quicken BUT ... - Sorry for shouting - Had to stop you ploughing on before it all goes wrong!

When you reinstall quicken don't install it to the C:\program files\ directory
Just install it to the C:\ directory. So it will be in C:\quicken
The reason for this is wondows vista protects the program files directory. I know Sage Accounts has the same problems and the workaround is to install it in c:\ as well.

But it seems to work for the OP apart from the registration process? I just dug out my old copy of Quicken Deluxe 2000. Officially it only supports W95 and W98. But I was running it fine on XP until I went to Mac.
We don't know for sure that the OP's laptop is running Vista.
And how is he/she going to deregister it from a dead PC?

But the OP has installed it OK. It just won't let him/her register it?

  • Thank you for your replies. I am running Windows XP. It has been installed okay and is up and running perfect. Only when we go into it it says we must register and it and it is counting us down and then it lets us enter.

It is Quicken Year 2000 Solution (based on Quicken 98 DELUXE) and when we try to register it says "server not found try again later"

I hope this is a bit clearer for you to advise.
