Trying to find joint flatshare / houseshare insurance for tenants

Hi there,

I'm hoping someone might be able to give me some advice. I'm trying to track down an insurance policy which will provide joint cover for all tenants living in a shared flat. The screenscraper websites such as Confused & Moneysupermarket don't cater at all for people living in a shared flat.

The only company I've found so far is Endsleigh Insurance, but I'm not particularly fond of them. Does anyone know of any other companies or brokers who'd be able to provide a (competitive!) quote which isn't sky-high?

Many thanks!

    Hi,

3 of us, all young professionals in full-time work, living in North London. I would go with Endsleigh, but I've had problems with them before, and it doesn't seem quite right only getting a quote from one provider!

You can do this with Norwich Union under their Home Plus Policy (They only do this through brokers). What they do is make all three tenants Joint Policy Holders (This means each tenant is a policy holder). It will cover all of the contents in the flat which is an advantage as no doubt some of the items are jointly owned.

The premiums with NU on this contract are not that cheap but when you split the premium between the three of you it should work out quite cheap plus you will have better cover than if you took out indivdual tenant type policies.

You need to speak to a good local broker eg not a Swintons type as a lot of brokers will not be aware of this. If they know what they are doing they will just ring their NU contact and get it cleared with them.

    Thanks, that's very helpful.

Do you have any advice about specific brokers?

I have had a look on https://www.biba.org.uk (They are a trade organisation and their members tend to be higher quality) try this one http://www.safewayinsurance.co.uk/ or this one http://www.halperninsurance.co.uk/

Advise them you are three tenants who are sharing and you have been advised that NU will cover you all under one policy as joint policy holders under the NU Homeplus contract. It should save a bit of messing about, they may have their own solution for you
