I've tried chopping them really small in recipes but she still finds them! It is only the texture, not the flavour that is the problem, does anyone have a suggestion how to get round this problem.
I already use garlic and chives and if the recipe is applicable I whizz the toms and onions together but that's as far as my brain will go:o
Over to you clever folk!:D

My daughter is exactly the same  If I'm cooking a casserole I'll put a halfed onion in for flavour and then whip it out at the end, or for dishes like chilli, spag bol etc I use onion granules.
It is a nightmare but my DD is 10 now and has always refused dishes with onions in - I've had to compromise after all I won't eat seafood (apart from prawns) and no-one is going to get me to eat them no matter how small you chop them up :rotfl:Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)0 -
Sorry I don't have any advice but your post made me smile as I was like that when I was young. I didn't mind raw onion but detested the look and texture of cooked. I only grew out of it when I was about 12 or 13 and started cooking with them in Home Ec. I must have driven my poor late Mum demented and there were no online helpful hints in those days!Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Hi kingshir,
My Dad is exactly the same. If I can't whizz them so he won't see them I either put an onion cut in half into the dish and fish it out before serving or just leave the onions out altogether. How is she with leeks? Would she be able to tolerate them as they sort of 'melt down' more than onions do?
This earlier thread may give you some ideas:
Onions in everything... aargh!

I was exactly the same as a child! I can't believe now it as I adore onions in all guises.
My mum didn't let my dislike for them bother her one bit. She just carried on putting them in things and I carried on picking them out.
Thanks mum for teaching me this method:D I use it all the time on my kids;)
I do however use this stuff a lot. I whizz it a lot finer than shown in the pic now. It is invaluable. You could do it with just onions, you can almost pulp them and they will disappear in dishes.0 -

How about using a cheese grater (small gauge) to grate the onion before frying? That way it completely melts into the dish.Cogito, ergo sum.0

Both my kids have been through this - and come out the other end - I just kept putting them in. Ds2 fished them out with his fork - ds1 had an amazing skill of putting a mouthful of food in, chewing swallowing and then sticking his tongue out with all the onion left on it (he was 3 or 4 at the time) - I couldn't do it if I tried!!!
The only compromise I made was I used to leave the pieces fairly large so that they could find them.“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

my dd is also the same, i tend to either let her pick them out herself which she does whilst moaning and whinging.
or for an easy life and if i've made a pasta sauce i will just blitz her sauce first.0 -
Lol...this brought back memories. Brother and I used to give Mum a headache over onions...he loved them, I hated them. She would put a whole peeled onion into whatever she was cooking then take it out, dish my meal up and then chuck the onion back into the pot and mash it up a bit for everyone else. Years this went on.
I love onions now though. :rolleyes:Herman - MP for all!0 -
Have you tried completely murdering it? I fry my onions to within an inch of their lives
Or I put the lid on and let them sweat for ages so they are very soft.
