I have a US laptop which doesn't have a £ key only a $. Is there any way i can make the $ button make both a $ and a £?

Yep just change the Regional and Language settings in the control panel, also check the Keyboard control panel...

Note normally the £ is above the 3 key, so that will be affected on a change, usually...
