Ho do I use SKYPE on my iPod TOUCH?

Just had an email from Skype saying I can use it on my iPod TOUCH. I didn't even know I could plug a microphone into mine? Has anyone explored this yet? (Mine was new 14 months ago - does that make it 2nd generation?).

Will Skype work on the iPod touch?

Skype presence and chat will work on all iPod touches. However, calling is only available on the iPod touch (2nd Generation) because Apple does not support microphones on the 1st generation.

i have had skype installed on my 1st gen touch, but never used it. you can tell pretty easily if your touch is 1st or 2nd gen as the 2nd gen ones have inbuilt speakers

you can get mics for the touch off ebay.

I haven't tried it myself yet, though I do have Skype installed on my 2g Touch (it's fine for Skype messaging), but I am looking at getting a mic for it in due course (not just for Skype - I do a few podcasts and I want to use it as a voice recorder for interviews, etc.!)
Apple do a headset with mic and cabled remote for £20, but it appears to be the same or similar design to the headphones they include with their iPods and you can do much better.
There is some useful info on the subject on the ipodtouchfans.com forum (I'm not a member or in any other was connected with the site!) - the thing to watch out for when looking for a mic for Skype is whether it will let you use headphones; apparently some of the microphones that you can get for the Touch turn off the headphone access so you have to use the build-in speaker, whereas other have an integral headphone or ofer a 'pass through' socket so you can connect your own headphones.

Thanks, gaming guy. Does that mean I can use my 1st generation iPod Touch (confirmed on Apple site) for Skype calls if I buy the right mike/speakers or is it a no go?
If so, are there any special headphones I should go for?

i really don't know, but from a quick google, the 1st gen touch will only support mics that plug into the dock connector with the latest software update.

you can't use the mics that plug into the headphone jack on the 1st gen touch, the headphone jack is wired up slightly different to the 2nd gen touch.

i didnt really play about with the skype app after finding out that you need to register an account so i uninstalled it.
