I have about £3750 worth of debts from credit cards, outstanding npower bills and overdrafts (passed to debt collectors).
I phone up the Debt Free Helpline and they said I could do a debt consolidation program where I would pay £100 a month and they would split it equaly between my debt collectors and freeze all interest.
It all sounded a bit too good to be true until they said they would take £35 a month from the £100 a month to cover their costs, and I would have to pay a £70 set up fee.
Is this the best I'm going to get or am I being taken for a ride?
None of my creditors will let me pay monthly now, they are all demanding full payment or court.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I may be wrong, but I'm sure there are companies out there who offer the same service but for no charge...0

Thanks for the quick reply. The guy on the phone from the Debt Free Helpline told me about this. He said they were charity's which would do it for no fee but he said they were funded by the debt collecting agencies and wouldn't freeze all interest and are quite sneaky?0 -

Don't trust the Debt Helpline guy - he's in business to make money, not help you.
Whether or not interest gets frozen is at the creditors discretion. There is anecdotal evidence (at least) that creditors prefer to deal with the charity organisations not fee charging DMP companies. CCCS or Payplan are most often advised on here. Also Christians against Poverty are also spoken of highly by others who have used them (you don't need to be a Christian). For contact details see the 'sticky' about 5 from the top on the DFW board.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -

Even if CCCS won't accept you on a DMP they will give you advice, as would the others - there is an online debt remedy tool you can use which could suggest the best way forward for you.
