Taxi from London to Gatwick airport

Options
Hi,i am wondering if anyone can recommend a taxi company that would do a cheap/reasonably priced transfer from my house in south london to Gatwick airport.
I got a quote from one that was more than double the cost of my return flight!
Any recommendations welcome.
Many thanks,
mt

It is actually quite a way from South London to Gatwick and the taxi is never cheap because of the distance, and it can take time.
I've found the best in terms of price/convenience/journey time is a taxi from home to East Croydon and then the train to Gatwick.

The trains are so frequent and cheap from south London (Clapham, Croydon, etc.) that a taxi really isn't worth the expense.

You don't say where in London, but from Chelsea it would be £41 for a saloon car.
    My DH is a cabbie:D

Yes use the train, but only a fool would use the Gatwick Express train... It's almost twice the price of and only four minutes quicker (30 mins instead of 34) than a normal train.
