Jeweller damaged ring! HELP!

My husband took his wedding ring in to be resized. It was a brushed metal ring - but when it came back it was completly shiny! It is ruined! They said it was 'dirty' and they made it better :( My husband complained and they said they could send it off somewhere to have them try to re-do the brushed look, but I don't trust them! And they are going on holiday tomorrow so they won't do it until the end of May.

I want to get his ring back, and take it to a better jeweller to have it delt with, but I don't feel like I should have to pay them, considering they ruined it (and didn't even resize it properly). What can I do?

Thanks for any advice :(

  • You need to give them the chance to fix it.

You need to give them the chance to fix it.

    Rubbish as ever.

You clearly have no confidence in the jeweller (understandably).

You are entitled to expect that they use reasonable skill and care in carrying out their service. Clearly they haven't.

You are now entitled to get it repaired (if possible) elsewhere and claim the cost from them or for them to pay for a replacement if a repair is impractical.
  • Thank you Tozer

Is this a law or something that I can quote to the jeweller when I go there? They are not taking this seriously (and haven't even apologised!)

    Cheers

There is - Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982. In addition, you have rights under the law of negligence.

Both actions will get you to, essentially, the same position.
  • To get a ring re-brushed will probably cost £35-£40, by the way.

I know because my wedding ring is (was) brushed gold in the middle and after years of wearing, it has worn completely smooth and shiny and this is what I was quoted for getting it rebrushed.

Wonder how they do it? Must be like giving a bit of a go with some sandpaper - albeit probably a bit more professionally done than that!
  • I did wonder the same thing, but dared not ask, lol.

I worked in a jewellers for a bit, i'm sure theres other ways but one they had for instore was something that actually looked like a paint brush, never saw them use it so can't give any more info on that but i don't think theres too many ways you can use such a tool ^^

Hope you get it all sorted ok.
