Ebay recorded delivery question

I sent an ebay auction winner an item on the 14.4.09 via Royal Mail recorded delivery. Just received it back today with the royal mail sticker on it indicating that the addressee has gone away. The buyer has not contacted me yet indicating that they have not received the item, but what sort of response should I send, now I have got back the item.
If I send back the item - surely I do not have to repay the postage charge do I?
Any help with this would be great.

I would say they never picked it up from the sorting office. Recorded items are only kept for 7 days officially. Contact your buyer and try and get to the bottom of it. They might have an old address on file with paypal.

Well, I'd email the buyer and ask what the !!!! is going on.

I would contact the buyer and see what happens.

If it was Royal Mail's mistake I'd suggest phoning them up or speaking to your Post Office to see if you have to pay for re-delivery. If you do, you may be able to claim it back later.

If it was the buyer's fault then it would be reasonable to ask him to pay for the additional postage costs you will incur.

Another thing to consider regarding the Royal Mail is sometimes (especially with blocks of flats) they fail to check to see if the resident is in and just leave a calling card in their letterbox. This then means that the resident has to go to the depot and depending on the opening times of the depot really depends on whether the parcel gets picked up.

If the person does not realise that Royal Mail only holds onto the parcel for 7 days...there you go!

This information is on the calling card in small print but is easily missed.

Myself, if they leave me a calling card the only opportunity I get to pick up from the depot is a Saturday (up to about 12 midday).

    So not great!
  • our postie just left a card the other day without ringing the doorbell, even though someone was in and a car was on the drive.
