    A couple of reasons ~
IE8 is known to have caused a HUGH number of problems for various people
Mcafee could easily be causing the problem (Another awful piece of software)

I cant really see anything else

TICK these in hijack then FIX them ~
    O2 - BHO: Browser Address Error Redirector - {CA6319C0-31B7-401E-A518-A07C3DB8F777} - (no file)
    O23 - Service: McAfee Application Installer Cleanup (0075421240389768) (0075421240389768mcinstcleanup) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\TEMP\007542~1.EXE (file missing)

then check for nasties (Especially as you use Mcafee)
Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD NOW')
    http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
    UPDATE and FULL SCAN
Post the log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

Thanks, I'll report back when I have carried out your suggestions. IE8 was only installed yesterday in an attempt to solve the problem which had been occurring with IE7.

See ~ its things like that you should really say in your initial report rather than just posting a hijack log.

    That points to infection then.
Or you have some PLUGINS running that are conflicting with IE (Do you know of any?)

Open IE and goto TOOLS ~ MANAGE ADD ONS ~ ENABLE or DISABLE
This will bring up all 'plugins'
Disable them one by one to try

    OR

To completely reset internet explorer ~

    1. Open Internet Explorer.
    2. Click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
    3. Click the Advanced tab.
    4. Under Reset Internet Explorer Settings, click Reset.

Ahh good old Mcafee... i like how people spend a lot of money on PC's and protect them with this nonsense.
If you spend £300-400 on a pc at least spend £30 on some proper security software.

OP - Have you tried using another browser to see if the problem persists only in IE, also IE isn't the best browser out there.
Debt was £9,000 3 years ago.

Bloody hard work, and had no money for 3 years paying it off. But worth it.
Paid off every single penny borrowed. Learnt my lesson.

.I can access the site ( Fidelity ) using Firefox on my laptop, and by using IE8 on another machine, so I am assuming that the problem lies in using IE with my laptop. I would change to using only Firefox but First Direct internet banking is not compatible with that browser which is why I persisted with explorer.

Firefix is SUPPOSED to work with it ~
    http://www.firstdirect.com/security/how_we_protect_you.shtml
"Secure sessions When you log in to Internet Banking, you are in a secure, encrypted session. This should be clear because the web site address begins "https://" and a closed padlock symbol will be displayed in the lower right hand corner of your browser. Customers using more recent browsers (e.g. Microsoft® Internet Explorer 7 or Mozilla Firefox® 3) will see the padlock in, or next to, the web site address bar."

Well they made a c*ck of that didnt they?

Im really not sure what to recommend now. Id personally prefer it if you reverted back to IE 7 but a few people have experienced problems doing this

I think for now ill take a deeper look at your computer and whats running

    Please run COMBOFIX
Follow the simple instructions it gives
Post the COMPLETE log it creates here (Split into sections if need be)

If it comes up with a RENAMING error then RIGHT click the exe file and RENAME and call it QWERTY (Making the complete file name 'QWERTY.exe')

    Ok

Log looks clean (Though Im unsure if the ORB NETWORKS stuff is really needed)

    Update JAVA

And give it a quick cleanup with ccleaner ~
Download CCLEANER (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION' ~ make sure YAHOO TOOLBAR is unticked on installation)
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Run the CLEANER scan (UNTICK 'cookies')
Then run the REGISTRY scan (Backup the registry when it asks)
