I want to invest £1000 pounds for my child in an account which will give him the best return by the age of 18.

Bung it into an investment trust for long-term gains. i.e. 5 years +
So many to choose from and a few links out there
I'd go for emerging markets such as India, Eastern Europe, Russia as a good long-term bets. Or to play safer go for a global growth trust.
At the end you would expect to get a pretty good profit which would be well within your CGT allowance, as taper relief would also apply to any gain.0 -
Are you placing it in trust or doing it as a record of a gift for IHT purposes? If so, the tax wrapper you use to invest in may need different to what you expect.
