Got Defrauded For 49p lol - but have questions

Ok so my bank contacted me today about some suspicious activity, turns out some how a medical company in the US charged me 49p (thank god so little) - all was sorted and new card is on the way, buttttt

A) Does this affect my credit rating at all?
B) Will my balances get transferred to the new card? For example I used 200 pounds on my balance so far this month, is this automatically transferred over to the new card. I also only just paid off last month's balance. What I'm asking is am i getting a totally new card or is my account continuing as if nothing happened? (The guy on the phone didn't seem to understand what I was asking, maybe a stupid question).

Any way thanks for your help.

  • I doubt that 49p will have any effect on your credit rating.

It is almost certain that your outstanding balances will get transferred to your new card. I am assuming that the bank is giving you a new account because your old account details have been stolen.

This happened to me last week. Halifax fraud department phoned to let me know they had stopped 4 transactions on my debit card from a US medical company! First two were what they called test amounts of under a £1 but the other two where bigger amounts. I was very impressed that they declined them straight away. The operator said that my card had been cloned, they stopped the card and sent me a new one but said my bank account was fine it was only the card that they needed to replace.

Absolutely no affect on my credit rating. You'll just get a new card (with probably a new number but this might not be needed), nothing else will change.

    Thanks for the replies.

I'm not sure how I was targeted. I'd hope my small town doesn't have criminals that clone the cards, we only have like 4 cashpoints lol, and other than that I've only used it in one bar for cashback, hmmm.

My bet is I got hit online somehow.

I was pleased they blocked it so quickly though.

I had only used me card once in the previous 6 months so it was fairly obvious to me where it had happened! A small restaurant that took my card to the till to pay as their hand held terminal "wasn't working". I was out with friends and had had a few drinks so wasn't really on the ball. I did contact the police but they said I couldn't raise a complaint as I hadn't lost any money and I couldn't prove anything. They did take the name of the restaurant though and said they would make informal enquires.
  • I had someone take 69p from a card that I was only paying back 0% so hadn't brought anthing on it,do make payments via the net. Card company wrote to me and stopped payment cancelled the card sent me a new one all within the week. But it is scarey to think how someone got my details.

I had exactly the same thing when out with my OH, except I wouldn't let it lie and insisted he go with the waitress while she put the payment through so it wasn't out of his sight. You have never seen evils like what she gave me. I kept checking my back for daggers through the evening.

A woman at an employment agency tried it with me once too - it was 'too far' to walk into the other room for the bank details form she'd 'forgotten', so she suggested taking my debit card herself instead- into the room that was 'too far' away! Keep an eye on your cards, people.

It happened to me too for about 69p, but Nationwide stopped it before it was taken out and put a stop on all purchases without my pin number, they just forgot to tell me, so 3 months of having payments declinded and being very embarrased, I phoned them up and found that this dodgy payment had happened just before Christmas last year.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I have just had a call from Tesco fraud asking if a 69p transaction at midnight was me also. The person tried to buy something for over £300 as well but Tesco refused it.

The only place I have visited where my card has been taken away from me is Wagamamma's Islington, so I won't let that happen again.

Very impressed with the quick pick up by them on it. Only trouble is I am away from home, in a hotel till the end of week so did have a massive bill to pay and a train ticket to buy to get home.

I had £2400 taken - quite a lot when you are a student, haha! No idea how it could have happened as I don't use my card anywhere dodgy, really the only time I use it is to buy train tickets and at Tesco! It's never been out of my sight so I have no clue how it could have happened. Whoever used it spent £2000 at Tesco (A different Tesco, one in London) which I'm assuming was electronics, £200 on topping up their Oyster card, and the remaining £200 on pizza. Seriously.

I got all of it back within a week but that was stressful and has made me extremely paranoid! To the extent that I now check my online banking every single day, haha :(
