What do people have against the old shape 3-series compact? I have owned both a 3-series coupe and a compact. admitedly, the compact is more basic but the driving experience is all there. Both are RWD and drive excellent. Remember, when the old 3 series compact came out, people stopped buying Golfs!!!

3 series compact is the pre 1991 E30 series underneath. Which is a good thing in a lot of ways since the E30 model has iconic statuse for the RWD fun it provided via its simple suspension set up.

I was not joking about my comment about golfs bledning into the background but there seem to be many die hard BM fans about and if running costs are as low as they state test drive both!

I dont like either myself though i would love a M5 but thats another matter for another day, Get insurance quotes for both cars and then go and test drive them. I know BM's are more common now but still if you go for the BM you can have lots of fun on back roads (i know i own a rear wheel drive 2.5l TR6) though it *Might* cost more overall or you may fall in love with the golf.

Overall get your insurance quotes and then test drive them both As you have to live with it!
