Very expensive TV and cons rights?

Hello all
My dad bought a TV from Curries in 2006. It's a JVC 20" flat screen. Down one side of the screen there is a blue line about 2inchs or so it's not solid unless a DVD is playing. On normal TV it is see through but still there and VERY annoying. It's been there more visable or more permanent, it used to come and go, in the past few months or so. It's not been near any magnets and it's never moved. We went through the paper work and after much scanning found a 12 month standard guarantee.
Now this TV cost 599.99 quid! I wasn't with my parents when they bought it otherwise I'd have screamed no! lol. They aren't silly just had the money to be a bit more frivalous then. Anyway, surely after 3 years for a TV that cost such a vast amount of money there is something we can do??
Has anyone got any advice as to what to do about this, or anyone that has had a similar problem?
Thanks
Melissa

how long has the bluie line been there ? if it appeared soon after they brought it then they should have said something ealier
aftwe 3 years you may have a problem but try speaking to the manufatuer first and see what they say
if they quote 1 year gaurantee then quote 6 years sales of goods act0 -
Sounds like what I had with my Sony, which was the optical block failing. (and a known issue with those particular TVs).
You need to get someone out to confirm the fault, what it is, is it repairable, how much will it cost and this is absolutely vital, whether in his professional opinion, the TV should have lasted longer bearing in mind the brand, specs, age and price paid. You must get this in writing.
Once you have that, you can then go back to Curry's and argue that the TV is not of satisfactory quality as per SOGA 79. They'll argue that you should have taken an addtional warranty, that is simply not true, your statutory rights are much more important than a warranty and you are covered by SOGA. If you don't let them browbeat you, they should eventually cave in and offer you a replacement (possibly with the cost of 3 yrs usage taken out) or partial refund (possibly in vouchers, but you don't have to accept that). If it is the optical block, they're unlikley to offer a repair, as the optical blocks cost more than the TV and with the price of TVs having gone down so much, it's probably not worth it.
If they dig their heels in, then you'll have to take them to Small Claims, but hopefully they'll cave in long before that. You can reclaim the cost of the engineer visit from them too, by the way.
PS: Kill Bill is incorrect, do NO go to manufacturers, your contract is with Curry's, not JVC. If you go to JVC, they will charge you for the cost of repairs, and quite rightly so.0 -

At the end of the day the TV's 2 years old minimum, its maybe expensive then but a 20" tv now would cost about £90.0

Assuming, of course, that the manufacturer's guarantee has now expired...0
