I am planning to drive from Scotland to Spain, its a round trip of arond 3,600 miles, I have a budget of £1000-£1500 for a car, was thinking of a diesel for mpg and reliability but not sure what kind of car to go for any ideas. cheers.

I was planning to keep it for about a year, going to put a tent in the boot and try and see as many places as possible, my boy has just turned 14 and I would like him to experience other cultures.

A VAG diesel is a good bet. The SDI engines are economical but wouldn't pull the skin of a rice pudding. I would consider a pug or citroen with a 2.0HDI engine too. These are very economical and actually pretty reliable (cabbies wouldn't use them if they weren't). If worst comes to the worst theres a dealer in every town in France and quite a few in spain too.
