Help needed laptop has died. Am posting this from my phone.

Should it work with the mains cable and no battery? Tried a new ac adaptor, when i plug it in the connection sparks and frazzles. Is the problem the laptop, the mains cable or the battery? Thanks.

Was the ac adapter the correct voltage for the laptop cos if not that would be why it fizzles.

Yes, both old and new adaptors are 65w.

    But is the voltage correct?
As you didn't explain what the original problem was, it's hard to offer advice.

Sorry. Both adaptors have 18.5v output and 100-240v input. It is an hp pavilion laptop 1000 series. Just came back from holiday and it wouldn't start up. thought maybe the battery, but surely the mains lead should work. Could it be the socket on the laptop that isn't working? Thanks for your time.

If the new mains adaptor is working OK it should run on mains even if the battery is dead. Certainly should not be sparking, which indicate a short in the power pin probably. or could be the mobo.
It was a bit premature buying a new adaptor, bettter to have checked the output from the old adaptor with a multimeter, if that is still outputting 18.5V then the problem is not with the adaptor.
