Please help me buy car insurance!

Hi,

I am so totally clueless about car insurance! I have been following Martins advice on getting cheap car insurance but I know so vey little about it that I am just making a whole big mess really.

The insurance is for my OH, he is 24 and passed today. We have a 1995 fiat punto and we want fully comp insurance. The stuff I don't get are things like excess, milelage (sp), I just don't know what to put in. I don't even know what a fair quote would be, any help would be great!!! :j

How many miles a year do you do? avg is about 10,000 miles, thats what i put.
Excess is how much your willing to pay in an event of an accident, i.e more excess you pay the lower the insurance quote but more you lose in an accident.
Quessing a fair qoute would be around £900 for a new driver though don't know the engine size, (quessing again around a 1.1?)

excess is the amount you pay in case of an accident. The higher you go the lower your quote becomes and vice versa.
I always opt for the highest and hope i never have to pay it

mileage is a difficult one to work out but you don't have to submit your mileage to them so they'd probably only tell if you're lying if you have to hand over your MOT's in the event of an accident. I put upto 6000 miles as i drive to and from work daily and a few thousand extra for all the other trips.

I don't know about miles per year as we have never driven before, I was putting 5000 as that includes a years worth of driving to work and then 2500 for other journies.

Your final quote will also depend on where you live... for example, if you live in Luton (4th in the country for car crime) you'll pay through the nose!

    Check https://www.confused.com

It will check against a database of 21 insurance companies to find the cheapest quote for you. Then use cashback sites to save even more if they have the concern insurance company included. Quidco, rpoints etc.

Thanks for all the help, we have insurance now!! :j

The excesses are high but I hope that we will be ok, my brother is an AA man so he will sort out any small probs anyway.

My OH is taking pass plus but it doesn't seem to make much difference to the cost of the insurance at some stores, we have gone with Tescos and they seem very good, and we get a £20 voucher too.

Out of interest how much was your insurance in the end? Not trying to worry you but Tesco are not always the cheapest company when it comes to insurance
